This is only part of what makes people seek out Pueblo real estate.
~ Pueblo History
Pueblo real estate began as Fort Pueblo in 1842. Fort Pueblo was built to allow trade and settlement near what was then the US-Mexico border. A few families lived here for several years and traded goods with the Native Americans of the land. Fort Pueblo was raided in the winter of 1854 by the Ute and Jacarilla Apache tribes. It lay empty and abandoned until 1858/1859, when the gold rush hit Colorado.
What is currently known as the city of Pueblo is actually a conglomeration of four towns: Bessemer, Pueblo, Central Pueblo and South Pueblo. The three "Pueblo" towns consolidated into one city in 1886, with Bessemer being added in 1894.
Until the Great Flood of 1921, Pueblo's main source of income was its saddle making industry. The flood wiped out nearly one-third of Pueblo's buildings and businesses, causing a great stress on the local economy that took years to get a hold of. The economy was further hit when the American steel industry declined dramatically during the 1970's and 1980's, forcing changes in one of the biggest employers in the area, what is now known as the Rocky Mountain Steel Mills.
Even with these economic hits in its past, Pueblo has sought to expand its economic horizons by pushing its efforts to build up its downtown area as well as increasing its trail system to capitalize on the beauty of its natural surroundings and entice people to visit.
