Monument is a great place to live, with it being just a short commute to
Colorado Springs, Pueblo and Denver.  The weather is another great detail here.  It is cooler in the summer than most places and gets great amounts of snowfall in the winter months.  Also, Monument has many great little shops and restaurants.

~ The History of Monument ~
Farming pioneers from Iowa settled in the town and, after many years, the town of Monument was incorporated (June 1879).  In the beginning there were many troubles with the local Indians.  So, for the protection of the settlers, a fort was built on McShane Ranch.  Stones encompassed the fort, the roof was made of logs and it had two foot thick stone walls.

The first name given to Monument was Henry Station, after the first Mayor.  In 1870, the town's named changed to Monument when the D&RG Railroad was built.  It was renamed Monument after the beauty of the rock formations that surrounded the town.  In July of 1879, the first town meeting occurred.  For many years, the farmers of Monument real estate supported the town, mainly with potato farming.  Other crops consisted of oats, rye and corn.  Because of the great number of farms and their production, Monument became the D&RG Railroad's main shipping point.

In December, many men were hired for the ice harvest to pack the ice houses used during the summer months to refrigerate the cars of the railroad that were carrying fruits and vegetables.  A creamery and cheese factory operated in Monument real estate.  The Carlson and Frink Creamery bought milk from the local farmers.  Black Diamond cheese was made here and shipped to many different states.

In 1907, the Monument Nursery was established  to grow new trees for the 15,000 acres of trees that were destroyed by the forest fire of Mt. Herman in the 1880s.  By 1926, the the entire area was reforested.  In 1965, the nursery was relocated to Basalt, Colorado.

In 1954, the Air Force Academy announced it would be building a new academy just six miles from Monument real estate, causing a great growth in the community.  Now there is very little cattle raising or farming done in the area.  Many older farms have been divided up for new home construction.  Many of the military personal liked the area so much, they bought land or homes to stay here for good.

~ Education in Monument ~
Residents of Monument real estate are served by the Lewis-Palmer School District, with five elementary schools (two of which have the pre-kindergarten program), two middle schools, one high school and one academy serving K-9.  The district has a student/teacher ratio of 16.1, making the district a great place for an education.  The district also allows for over $3,000 per student for instructional expenses.
