The federally designated National Historic Landmark, Pikes Peak, is a mountain area located in El Paso County, Colorado.  Pikes Peak is part of the Rocky Mountains, only 10 miles from Colorado Springs real estate and 60 miles from Denver.  The Pikes Peak real estate community can be reached by Interstate 25 and Pikes Peak Highway, with breath-taking views along the way.  Pikes Peak stands a massive 14,115 feet tall and offers some the most beautiful property in Colorado.

Pikes Peak real estate is becoming one of the most sought after areas in the state.  It has become famous for being a landmark that can be seen far into the Great Plains and Kansas.  The area does not receive as much snow as some of the nearby mountains, but, non-the-less, it is still an outdoor playground.

Pikes Peak has a visitor center with a restaurant and gift shops at the summit of the mountain.  Many visitors come to Pikes Peak and fall in love with community.  They soon return to set roots permanently.  The roads of the community are maintained by the City of Colorado Springs.

The United States Army Pikes Peak Research Laboratory has sat at the summit of Pikes Peak since 1969.  The laboratory is for medical research to evaluate the effect of high altitudes on the human physiology along with medical parameters of military interest. 

The History and Discovery of Pikes Peak ~
The Pike expedition members, led by Zebulon Pike, were the first to see Pikes Peak in 1806, however they didn't make it to the top.  The summit wasn't reached until the summer of 1820.  Edwin James, the first European to climb to the summit, made it in two days.

In 1858, gold was discovered in the area.  The slogan of the Colorado Gold Rush was "Bust or Pikes Peak".  Gold was not found in the mountain of Pikes Peak until 1893, at what became known as Cripple Creek Mining District.  This was the spot of the last major gold rush.

Clark Gruber & Company, in 1860, started minting gold coins that bore the phrase "Pikes Peak Gold".  The US Treasury purchased the minting equipment in 1863 for $25,000.  The Denver Mint Company was opened shortly after.

In 1893, Katharine Lee Bates wrote the song America the Beautiful after she took a carriage ride to the top of Pikes Peak.

Pikes Peak Education ~
The educational needs of residents of Pikes Peak real estate is provided by the Colorado Springs School System.  There are seven different districts that make up the Pikes Peak school system.  Over ten colleges and universities are in the area along with four private schools.  The Colorado School for the Deaf and Blind is also located in the area.
