~The History of Cripple Creek~
Cripple Creek sits at an elevation of 9,494 feet. It was once considered an unimportant area. Several prospectors would avoid the area after the Mount Pisgah hoax. But, in 1891, the last great Colorado gold rush began when rich ore was found in the area. Thousands came to the region seeking their fortune. Cripple Creek real estate had become well populated by the turn of the century.
Several of the areas miners joined the Western Federation of Miners, a miner's union, during the 1890s. In 1894, an important strike took place. It was one of the very few times that a state governor had to call the national guard to protect miners from the owners of the mines. This created the Colorado Labor Wars. The struggle took several lives.
Underground gold mining is all but exhausted in Cripple Creek, but what is known as open pit mining continues to operate in close-by Victor, Colorado. The area has been somewhat of a ghost town in its past. After the gold rush, most everyone moved away. But now, the population is steadily growing again. The area is more of a tourist and gambling town than a ghost town. Many historic buildings are now casinos. These gambling facilities have played an important role in bringing vitality and revenue back to the area.
